What I hear writers say: "I don’t like speaking, it makes me uncomfortable, I get too nervous, I don’t know what to say." There’s a reason you feel this way. We’ve come to believe *myths* that have shaped our perception of who can be speakers and what audiences expect. We’ve mistakenly heard or learned speaking strategies and styles from extroverts (many of whom are men with booming voices who jump around on stage - Tony Robbins comes to mind!) and think we have to be like them. You do *not* need to be this kind of speaker (unless, of course, you want to be). Whether you’re writing a book now or are planning to in the next year or two, book agents and publishers want to see that you have an audience interested in your book AND that you have the ability and connections to promote it once it comes out. This is where public speaking comes in! It’s an incredible opportunity to build credibility and authority, test out ideas, and reach more audiences. After speaking throughout my career and working closely with hundreds of women, what I've learned is: **Speaking is a powerful and impactful way to share stories and exchange ideas.** You do this in your writing and now I want to help you do this through public speaking. In our Speak Your Way to Publication workshop, you’ll work with me and my book coach Tiffany Hawk to: ✅ Identify your natural speaking style and how to leverage your strengths so you feel more comfortable and confident ✅ Learn specific strategies for finding speaking opportunities that are your best fit so you can build your speaking platform as an author ✅ Understand how to select the best parts of your book for your talks to make the most impact on your audiences My aim is for you to fall in love with (or at least strongly start to consider!) the power of public speaking to share your stories and ideas with more people.

The older I get, the older, old is! Aria Bendix and Katie Mogg write in AOL about American Association’s Psychology & Aging Journal which cites research about ageing in Germany. The results say that ‘people in their mid-60s believe old age starts at 75 - but the older people get, the later they think it begins.’ The study’s lead author Markus Wettstein, confirms that, as we age today, we believe old age starts far later than 10 or 20 years ago. With modern times bringing improvements in physical and psychological health, ‘people who feel younger also believe that old age starts later.’ The reverse is also true, with poorer countries where people who are lonelier and unhealthier end up dying younger. Whilst not every capitalised, industrialised country has the same high level of health and mental wellbeing as Germany, it’s clear that prosperity, lower stress, and better health mean we age more slowly and live longer. I do agree. If you’re happy, fit, stress-free, and living your best life, it looks like you’ll go on doing that for much longer. I’m up for that. Are you making this common leadership mistake? As a leadership coach and team consultant, I’ve noticed a recurring theme. Leaders often seek to avoid the authoritarian vibes of that boss we all dreaded working for in our 20s, leading them to adopt an overly flexible approach. While they intend to avoid hurting feelings and treat people like adults, this can result in a reluctance to set and communicate clear expectations. Even though we all have expectations, failing to make them visible is unfair and often leads to frustration and potential breakdowns in relationships. Imagine trying to play soccer on a field without boundary lines—would you want to do that? No! It would just be a lot of running and guesswork. We don’t need a "cool" leader; we need a stable adult. We need clear lines to define where the field begins and ends. Everyone needs boundaries. But the mistakes don’t end there. Instead of recognizing this as a lack of boundaries, leaders often believe they need to be harder, more rigid, and more in control, concluding that empathetic leadership “doesn’t work.” This causes them to swing to the other side of the pendulum, focusing too much on accountability without any empathy. Now your team is highly disorientated, confused and demotivated. Imagine your parent telling you to "just have a good time with your friends." and you return to their anxiety and yelling that you "returned home too late". So, the next time you’re concerned about hurting someone's feelings or find yourself lashing out when people aren’t meeting expectations, check out the resource below! Fantastic interview in which Drs. Wendy Grolnick and Frank Worrell bust several myths related to motivation! You likely believe some of these myths, as they are prevalent in our social zeitgeist. One podcast highlight (I've added some icons 🌟 for emphasis): Mills: "Now, another myth that you discuss in the book is the idea that if you visualize success, it will come. Why is that a myth? I mean, what do you need to do then instead of visualizing success?" Grolnick: "...And so it turns out that there’s a lot of research, some of it by Gabrielle Oettingen and other people, to show that if you visualize the outcome, it’s kind of like your mind thinks you’ve done it and you don’t really have put energy toward the task as much as 🌟 if you visualize the process of getting there, the steps that you need to get there—it energizes you to move forward and it also gives you the information you need to reach that goal."🌟 "...it’s definitely a myth that you should visualize running across the finish line. 🌟 It’s really better to visualize the steps you need to take every morning, getting up, turning your alarm clock on, going out for a run and practicing and figuring out how many miles you need to go each time and so forth. And setting these smaller goals and really planning for things by saying if it’s 6 o’clock in the morning, I’ll be out there running. It gives you a plan. It energizes you for each of the steps. You can plan for all the distractions that might come in your way that will prevent you from doing it.
